The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) recently announced the recipients of its prestigious awards program, with CEFLEX stakeholders featuring front and centre among the winning innovations and collaborations.
Mono-material with post-consumer recyclate
Henkel’s Persil Active line was a winner in the ‘packaging materials and components category’ for its mono-PE with 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) flexible packaging for laundry powder detergent.
Produced with fellow CEFLEX stakeholders Borealis, PCR supplier, and Korozo, film converter, the packaging structure achieves the same weight as conventional virgin counterparts and no changes in visual perception of print quality and film surface. The partners also focused on maintaining the film’s processability on industrial Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) lines, ensuring that it can be seamlessly integrated into existing manufacturing processes without compromising efficiency or quality.
‘Incorporation of PCR material in primary packaging for premium products is still rare in today’s market, presenting a significant opportunity to drive demand within the recycling industry, particularly for flexible packaging’ noted the submission evaluation. And judges recognised that ‘This effort not only promotes the circularity of materials but also improves the quality of recyclates, paving the way for more sustainable packaging solutions’.
Henkel and Korozo were also rewarded for further collaboration – a Mono-PE recyclable zipper pouch – which claims a 75% reduction in packaging plastic per product and a reduced pouch size leading to a 1/3 decrease in transport related emissions. And independently, judges recognised Korozo in the health and personal care category for their Mono PE recyclable standup pouch with child deterrent zipper for detergent capsules.
